Building Survey or Hire Solicitor first

Do people usually get a building surveyed before hiring a solicitor?

If I get the building surveyed and there is something that puts me of buying, I only lose the survey cost, however if I have already hired a solicitor to start the conveyancing and decide not to buy, I lose money to the solicitor AND the survey.

    What if you get the survey done, all OK, employ solicitor who finds something which puts you off buying the property?
    You lose money by having already paid out for the survey?
  • EA will probably want a solicitor name to put out the "acceptance of offer" paperwork...so you at least need to have one in mind, and preferably ready to confirm they are acting for you.

    My solicitor was happy to keep their actions/outlay to a minimum until the survey was done.

    G_M is right to suggest either side could fall down. But I'd lean towards survey, as it could affect re-negotiation of price and result in a breakdown between buyer and seller, more fundamentally.

    Though I'm sure there are some quite serious solicitor example issues that could rival it...

  • Thanks. My solicitor has sold me if the deal falls through I would be charged a maximum of £100 (excluding 3rd party fees, land reg etc). So I would be happy to hire a solicitor now and ask him to hold off on a few things until I have done the survey.
