Ford Mondeo MK3 Query

  • I did the flywheel on mine at 135k not that long ago and while the gearbox was out I popped a new clutch in. Can all be done for just over £400 if you shop about. It's now on 162k. Been a good car.

Handbrake cables are prone to stretching.
    EGR valves get blocked.
    Rear calipers CAN seize.

The Mondeo really is a good workhorse, there are going to be faults and issues with all cars at some time or another, but when you look at the kind of mileages Mondeo MK3's seem to cover then I can forgive a few handbrake cable and a DMF.

Though I thought my rear caliper was siezed and it turned out to be the handbrake cables.

Mine is now on over 145,000 miles on a 04 plate. Its a TDCi130. Goes like stink and will out accellerate a BMW 328i from 30-70 as one such owner found out. Unlike bigjl though, I never get under 50MPG - usually mid 50's with a nice mix of town and country A road driving. Best I've had is 70MPG pottering about at 50MPH.

I bought it at just over 90,000 miles 3 years ago.

In that time the faults have been:

Blocked up EGR valve. Didn't actually cause a problem but I decided to check it when I got the car - was quite bunged up with only about 1" diameter hole clear so cleaned it out which made it go better. Checked it the other week to do a writeup on here and it was still clean 50k later.
Alternator bearing. Cost me £120 for a brand new alternator from Ford plus £80 fitting which came to just £30 more than local factors wanted alone for a recon with only 6 month guarantee.
Rear subframe bushes. A common problem on the saloon/hatch - listen for knocking from the rear with passengers in. I replaced mine with polyurethane bushes instead of rubber ones. They'll outlive the car at a cost of £200 inc parts & labour.

And thats it in 55,000 miles of motoring. Its getting near due a set of pads and front discs soon though.

I service it when its due - £150 for two minor and £180 for the major one every third service at local Ford dealers which is £2 more than local garages.
  • well, i faff'd around and ended up missing out on this coz i rang garage and car has been sold.
Thanks for all the replys :)
  • Keep looking, plenty more out there!
