Fuel Additives - Are they worth it?

I'm keen to improve my MPG and have heard a lot of stories about fuel additives - anyone got any experience as the internet seems to be inconclusive. Some claim they work and others say they're a waste of time.

Thanks.

Yes they do work, under test conditions with a brand new car driving at a constant speed, the same as new tyres from Mic**** might improve your mpg.

    Take it as you want.
I all have learnt is from others on many sites.
    Seek legal help if unsure.
Dont pay Private Parking tickets - they are mere invoices.

  • I actually did get the Michelin tyres back in January and they have marginally improved my MPG. Difficult to tell this kind of thing for certain as there are so many factors involved but I reckon I save around 1p per mile (was getting 10.5p per mile before, now it's 9.5p) So over the course of the tyres lifetime, around 40,000 miles they'll pay for themselves and give me a "profit" of around £150.

Do additives pay for themselves and which ones are best?

Additives won't pay for themselves, don't even bother....

When you work out how much the price per litre goes up after you add the cost of the additives, you'll be paying anything from 5-20p more for every litre.... That's 25p-£1 a gallon.

Can additives clean the injectors in diesel engine or it is a myth?

Well that's a bit of a double ended sword......

The injectors are protected my fuel filters, important to remember than.

Additives may remove gunk from the injector, but they risk dislodging gunk from the fuel lines and carrying it into the injector anyway. I wouldn't risk it unless you really think you've got injector issues.

the chances of getting gunk in fuel lines is very slim these days with the fuel and filters being of better quality, the injectors in diesels can get a build up of gunk around the nozzle but only really on higher mileage/older cars.
if your car falls in to this bracket then i would give it a go only if mpg is poor and engine is a bit lumpy other than that would leave well alone.
