Hi, I'm hoping someone may be able to give me some advice as after visiting numerous websites I'm at a loss! My friend is due to attend University this year to study for BSc degree in Physiotherapy. As it is an NHS course as such the course fees are paid for. However
she previously completed a degree about 8 years ago and took out all of the standard student loans provided by the SLC in England. She's currently working full time but will be finishing this job and relocating to attend University to study full time. I'm really unsure if she is allowed to get another student loan from the Student Loan Company or not as this is a second degree. No-one seems to know the exact answer not even the student loans company themselves!! We're desperate to try and find additional funding but fear she may not be eligble for most things! The only info that seems to be available in general is all geared towards current students or those who are attending University for the very first time but nothing about if you do a second degree course. Can anyone please help or point me in the right direction?
NHS funded degrees are exempt from the rules regarding graduates doing another degree so she should be able to get the laon as well as the NHS fees/funding.
Not all the advisers at the SLC fully understand this so she may have to explain it to them. I haven't got time now to find the link to this information but if you search this board there was someone recently in a very similar situation who sorted things out successfully and that thread might help.0 -

The information you have been given is not entirely correct. Although, as a graduate you should, you will be entitled to funding from the Student Loans Company, you will not be able to receive the full amount. Rather, you will be eligible for half the loan and the rest will e made up via an NHS bursary. Hope this helps to clear things up for you.0 -
My ex-student son has just received a demand for £1194 from his university stating that the grant not loan they awarded him was in error. They are demanding a full refund immediately. Where does he stand as we thought a grant was not repayable and this error is their fault not my sons. Thanks in advance.0

Is it the maintenance grant from the student loans company or a bursary from the university that is in dispute?0

hi. it is a bursary from the university. he never applied for it they just awarded it based on our household income.0

I never said that people on NHS related degrees got the full loan!
Whether you do a degree like this as your first degree or after having graduated in another subject, your funding is via an NHS bursary, topped up by a partial loan.0 -

If you have a look for the thread entitled "Midwifery applicant and financial options " with a last post of 22/06 you'll see exactly this situation explained by Taiko (who's very knowledgeable). She even quotes the appropriate part of the handbook and has already enabled someone in this situation to sort out the finances for their new degree.0 -
Thanks so much for all of your help! I'm off to have a look at the other thread - this student funding really is a nightmare. Seems much easier when you're just doing a bog standard undergraduate degree at 18 straight from college - anything after that and SLC seems to know nothing and the Universities aren't much help either. Thanks so much everyone.:o0

I recently got a bonus in my paycheck for doing a lot of extra on call work. Because of this my student loan payment was an extra £180. Is there anyway to reclaim this or do I just have to live with it?0

Hi all.
I start a foundation degree in sep and could do with a few pointers.:j
I live with my partner and 2 year old son.
My partner works full time and makes about 19k PA.
When I start my course my son will go to nursery 3 days a week.
I'm working part time evenings and earn 5k PA.
We have a mortgage etc etc.
Any ideas?
Cheers.
