Browser timing out too quickly

Trying to sort out an issue on my dads laptop. Basically it seems that the browser is timing out very quickly after entering a web address without giving the browser time to load the page.

For example when clicking the google result for Ebay the page tries to load for approx 1 second and then times out giving two options:

One of them is ‘diagnose connection problems’ and I can’t remember the other. When he clicks on diagnose there is no solution provided but the webpage then loads up.

Laptop is Sony Vaio running 64 bit Windows 7. The problem was happening in IE 8 but I installed Firefox and the problem continued.

Any clue?

  • At this point in time it might be a good starting point to undertake a System Restore. It cannot make it worse and it may well cure the problem.

  • .....and if my previous suggestion doesn't work then try rebooting the Router.

If its infected it could well make things worse

  • Does this sound like it could be an infection?

Last malwarebytes quick scan was a quick scan about two weeks ago. I'm trying to deal with his laptop by remote desktop as I live 200 miles away

  • I will do a Malwarebytes scan again. Does it make a difference if its a quick scan?

I am leaning to the side that its a wireless issue but in my current state of clutching at straws I am considering a factory restore.
