Phone call from someone claiming to be from Windows

Hiya, hope I'm posting in the right place.

My Dad has just phoned and said he has just got a phonecall from an Indian man claiming to be from Windows. He asked my Dad if he would be prepared to give him his password  so he replied no. He said thats very good you shouldn't do that but I am phoning to inform you that you have a very serious problem with your internet security, it has a virus and has been hacked. He told him that the damage was already done and they had got into all sorts of information from their computer. He told him that he would send him an email.

Dad isn't very good on the computer and my mums not much better so understandably they are very worried.

Me and my husband both think this sounds like a scam - what do you think?
