Disabled Persons Railcards

Options
Are these available from local councils at discounted prices or do I have to apply through "NationalRail" ?

  • The DWP = Legally kicking the Disabled when they are down.
  • I think *some* (but not many) local councils will offer them instead of a bus pass if you haven't got a good bus service. Otherwise it's £48 for 3 years, which I think is fantastic value - as you and a companion both get the discount fare.

Wheelchair users get big discounts on walk on fares without a railcard, if that applies to you and the way you travel on trains.

The local train discounts here are as part of the national bus pass scheme and they are very, very limited and not valid from major stations, just rural side lines.

Thanks - I have emailed my local council to ask - why isn't there standardisation with something like this ?

Because most other councils give out bus passes instead.
It's like asking why young person's cards aren't provided by university.

But here (in Deepest Darkest Somerset) - there are no (regular) buses either - so it's a Lose-Lose situation !!

I know what you mean Twinkle. I live in a rural area with the rubbish bus service, but only get the bus pass. The neighbouring authority (half a mile away!) gives people the choice. I have bought my own Railcard though, and it's saved me and DH a fortune.

I have the Scottish Entitlement card and this also allows me discounted travel on First Scotrail trains [within Strathclyde] and also the Subway (60p for a single journey, same price as a child ticket, rather than the standard adult fare of £1.20).

No idea if this applies to other parts of the country, but it may be worth checking with your local Council. :)

And those there are in rural Somerset are expensive :( I remember that!

My local council give out a national bus pass which includes tram and train travel in the county. I got my Railcard separately. Worth it, though, since my family all live out of area.

And rare - they don't have a regular reliable long distance service - once a day at the best
I need to go by train.....
