Shabby chic decorating

I really love the shabby chic look but can't find much info/ideas.

Can anyone help please?

  • Just go for 'faded elegance'; a beautiful gilt picture frame looks fabulous if it's very slightly rubbed or chipped, an old dirty oil painting can have so much atmosphere if lit properly, a battered leather Chesterfield sofa with faded cushions oozes class, a worn Persian rug is simply beautiful......etc. etc!
Think of all the grandest stately homes both here and abroad; art and furniture has been collected over centuries and nothing really matches.
The 'three piece suite and contemporary hearth-rug from Ikea look' is definately NOT shabby chic! :D

  • We just rubbed down the cupboards in our kitchen and decided not to bother repainting them. They were dark green and now there's the previous cream colour showing through. Very distressed, very Period Homes and very labout saving!

Pick out 3 main colours, I have cream, deep red and gold in my front room.
Then have anything - stripes, plain, florals in those colours. You may have a painting you like, you could pick the accent colours from that.
The furniture is dark wood but not 'matching', and I have scatter cushions and a throw which are not matching either but all within the shades mentioned. I also have a lovely lampshade from the charity shop. Lighting makes a big difference! I have found it is a look which has evolved in my room as I could not afford to do the whole lot at once!

    Thanks.
I've found some great bits to put up.
I'll post some pictures later if I have time!
