Sorry if someone has already suggested this but cant you get the train from East Croydon to St Pancras and walk?

That would be the same train as to Farringdon..

Have you looked into a zone 1- 5 travel card - it shouldnt cost 70 more then your current ticket. Again this all depends on where you live

    She lives outside Zone 6.

You may get lucky - if these plans go through you may find in a few years you get direct trains to Farringdon! You may have noticed some platforms on your line being extended in preparation for it.

well if there are trains every 15 mins into victoria then the quickest way i imagine would be just get the vic line to KX then circle to farringdon - overall about 20 mins tops of travelling on the tube.

P.S it wasnt so i co uld stalk you it was so i could look a variety of different ways on my machine.

Its not possible for O.P. to give exact details - in case the boss is reading....

He/she has already mentioned that this is only proving remotely possible because of a degree of "shaving" off the workday.
  • If the train to Victoria is every 15 mins then why not the Victoria line to Kings Cross and walk, or even change at Green Park (or a lovely walk through the park from Victoria!) for Picadilly line to Kings Cross if worried about the Victoria line.

Dont know if it will make a difference but might be worth considering that Blackfriars will be open in 2012 so that might help?

I work with 3 people who live in Croydon and they have less hassles getting in than I do, and I am only a few stops away with both Central and Hammersmith & City lines to chose from!

I wish I would take my own advice!

I think you're forgetting the option of getting the bus to Farringdon, which is easier and quicker than you think. Trust me I know this works!

If you can get to Waterloo by train (and if you used to go into Victoria, you could do this by changing at Clapham Junction), walk five minutes down The Cut to Blackfrairs Road. There are two buses - the 63 and 45 - which go straight to Farringdon and run every few minutes. They'll get you to outside Farringdon station in under 10 minutes as it's mostly dedicated bus lanes. The 63 carries on to Kings Cross station - so you might want to go into that station and reverse the journey.

If you work at the Barbican side of Farringdon, get the 100 bus from the same stop as it goes around St Pauls and up to London Wall. Farringdon is an inconveniently placed station on the network so it's better to get to the area by other methods of transport.

My o/h does your journey every day but in reverse (home is Farringdon, work is Hampshire). This is by far the best method and saves you using the tube in rush hour (vile!)
  • I was just like you 3 years ago and I hate to travel. For me, I had to travel for about 1 to 2 hours just to get to the office and its also killing me! Well then I decided to resign and work as a virtual worker instead. No need to travel, no need to wear corporate dress, less expenses, I'm safe, plus i see my kids even when i work. Just a thought:0)

But how does that make the journey any quicker or easier?

It doesn't - but it will get you to work on time and hopefully leaving earlier you might avoid some of the commuter rush.

My husband used to work for a company that had its premises 10 minutes drive away. Then they move. The commute started taking an hour a day & cost a small fortune. The extra mileage was also having a detrimental effect on our car - but he put up with it because he had no choice - he needed the job. Same with you, until you find something closer to home, you have no choice. So leave home earlier and at least make the journey a bit more comfortable.
  • Thanks for all of your useful advice and feedback. I'm definitely going to try some of these suggestions next week so see if any work out quicker and I'll post back with the results of my stopwatch test!

I guess there's a trade-off between the journey being quicker but more expensive, or slower but less expensive, so I need to work out what I'm happy with. If I can only shave a few minutes off the journey though, regardless of cost, I think I'll start looking for other jobs in the hope I can find something easier.
