Laid off today, so some questions about housing benefit and jsa

Hey all,

I lost my job today which is just a complete loads of !!!!. I'm now needing to see what benefits I am entitled to so that I can search for another job and pay my rent.

The situation I am in is this: I live with my Dad who requires me to pay 50 quid a week rent and he really needs it to be able to afford the house.

Will living my Dad stop me from getting any help with the rent given my situation?

Er yeah, you won't get HB for living with your parents.

  • You won't be able to get housing benefit to pay to your Dad.

Unfortunately the loss of a job can affect several family members. Your Dad can't have been expecting you to stay at home forever though :S You will be able to claim JSA but sometimes the first payment can take a few weeks to come through.

Perhaps you can give your Dad some of this money. Sorry about you losing your job x
  • Sorry just thought, we can't your Dad afford the rent on the house? Perhaps if this is because of your income he would be able to claim housing benefit now?

If you were sacked you wont be able to get JSA either, if you were made redundant or your contract ended you can claim it.

You can't get housing benefit while living with a family member, or renting from a family member.

You can get local housing allowance if you rent from a family member but only if its a proper tenancy, not a contrived one, and the tenant does not live in the same property as the landlord.

It's not possible in the OPs situation where they are a lodger with a live in landlord whose a close relative.

The OP should run their situation through the Turn2us online benefit calculator to check the household's overall benefit entitlements.

They are eligible for Job Seekers Allowance, assuming they've not been sacked.

  • I get housing benefit and I rent from my mother, however this is a totally legal tenancy and the house was buy to let. So you CAN get housing benefit when renting from a relative, it wasn't easy and we had to produce ALOT of paper work to prove that she didn't live in the property and that it was a ganuine rental agreement and even have a home visit from the council ... however, you can NOT get housing benefit when the parent is living in the property.
Also, as you were fired from your job you will not be able to claim JSA for the first 13 weeks of unemployment.

Is the house owned or rented by your dad, if it is rented and he can not afford it surely he can claim Housing Benefit himself? It's kind of unfair for him to rely on you, what if you moved out? How would he cope then?!!

Hope you get this sorted & find another job soon!

    Good luck

The OP hasn't stated they have been sacked, and if they were it's 26 weeks not 13.

I agree with Caz. I think that the OP is talking about paying for his board rather than rent and this should be paid out of his JSA.
