Thunderbird Email Crashing and Full?

Thunderbird keeps crashing and won't let me delete or download messages. On googling I realise I should have been regularly compacting folders which has never been done and it won't let me do it now - it starts and then closes itself down part way through.

I've tried deleting .msf files as suggested here
http://www.the-pc-guru.com/Thunderbird_problems_build.php
but it's no better. The more I fiddle about trying to delete messages with it crashing after each one or two the worse it seems to be getting. There are about 3000 messages in the inbox.

Is the best solution now to uninstall and then reinstall the program?

Have you already tried the second method, recreatig the account, as suggested on that link?

It is less drastic than a reinstall.

Yes I tried the second method too but no luck with that either.

I've not compacted my thunderbird folders either and I have over 1000 emails in my inbox and nearly 30000 in my deleted folder. Despite this thunderbird is working fine. It does seem to freeze for a while when I move to the deleted folder but after 30 or 40 seconds it is working fine. Are you sure that your thunderbird is not momentarily freezing rather than crashing? My trash & inbox folders are both around the 275MB size, I'm guessing yours are smaller so thunderbird should still be working for you.
