housing benefit

I currently live in the marital home after my husband left last year and left me with a massive mortgage and huge debts . I am now trying to sell the house for a number of reasons for example the payments, the fact he can come and go as he pleases, the memories here etc and I will be renting. According to a few websites I can get help with rent as my income is less than £200 a week plus tax credits but I dont know if this is correct. Rent is very expensive these days but if I am going to get help I can get somewhere better for me and the children. Can someone who has been in this position offer any help also how long does it take for housing benefit to start to be paid? Will I have to pay the full rent for a while before I get help? Thankyou for any advice
