What are Microsoft on??

Interesting article on Vista:

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=35057

So if you want to upgrade your system or a bit breaks it means you may have to stump a small fortune to buy another license!

I will stick with XP for as long as possible;so do many people I know who thought they may upgrade in the next year. MS have gone mad with all these restrictions on this OS!

Looks like I may have to get a console for my gaming needs!!

The only change seems to be that you can only move it once, and the only bits that might trigger it to think it is a new PC is a CPU or motherboard.

I think the vast majority of PC users would just buy a new PC with it pre-installed anyway.

Interesting that the original story the ingquirer quotes has changed a fair bit..

  • What about the rest of us?? There are loads of people who build their own pcs and also upgrade some of the components every year or so. Even a graphics card upgrade will trigger this silliness.

It seems that MS are treating enthusiasts as criminals! Good move MS in trying to alienate a whole segment of the market!! I bet AMD,Intel and Nvidia are going to be so happy about this!!:rotfl:

Good thing for MS that Linux sucks at games when compared to Windows:rolleyes:

Haven't seen any justification for this claim? A new graphics card / extra hard disk / memory etc shouldn't trigger a new machine alarm. Just as it doesn't for XP.

And it could all change by the time Vista actaully makes it to the shelves sometime in the next decade.. by which time everyone will have seen the light and have resurected OS2..

  • I had to re-register MS Office 2003 Pro when I changed my graphics card!

XP you can move to as many pcs as you want, just need to reactivate it.
vista they are trying to only allow you to move it once.

OEM versions CANNOT be moved from one computer to another according to the EULA

"The OEM license for XP restricts the use of the license to only the first computer on which it is installed and activated--it cannot be moved to another computer."

Yet I have moved my OEM that I got with my Time computer to 3 others. Even when I phoned up to activate it because I had activated over the net too many times all I was asked was how many computers I had it installed on. I told him one and he gave me my activation code.

I'm sure that many enthusiast PC builders will find ways around this restriction like they do today. The only people this will catch out are those that don't know any better.
