  • You could stamp on them, that would agitate them a bit more, or could you afford to buy a small basin to wash them in, which might be a bit easier. Also make sure you buy handwashing soap as machine wash has different properties.

Doesnt sound too bad to me.

I still handwash clothes sometimes - in my case thrown into a sink full of hot water and detergent one at a time. Give each item a good "rootle-around" and then place on draining board. Once they are all done - then rinse out individually under cold tap. Job done...

Is your shower a cubicle, or in the bath? If it's in the bath then grape-treading is the answer! Put 2 or 3 inches of hot water in the bath, dissolve the washing powder in it, add clothes, roll up jeans, remove shoes, get in the bath and give the clothes a good trampling. then rinse until the water is clear. You could even do it while you're showering!
If I'm over the hill, where was the top?

Another thought - to me it doesnt matter much WHAT I use as the detergent (I've been known to use up shampoo that I didnt like before now...). My only thing I bother about is that I use "handwash" detergent (eg soap flakes) for anything "delicate" (eg woollen items). Otherwise - I just use whatever detergent I am using as "standard" in my washing machine ...

of course you do Ceridwen, but you mostly wash your clothes in the machine, they won't wash properly in the manner OP has suggested in machine powder, especially in a hard water area. But you are right about the shampoo, it would most likely work but probably be an expensive way of washing clothes. OP you can buy handwashing powder or you can buy it in soap form. Fairy do a very good one.

  • I often hand wash when we're camping and I use either shampoo or a Lush shampoo bar - the advantage being that you don't have to spend time and water rinsing, rinsing and rinsing as the left over detergent doesn't irritate your skin or leave any residue.

  • BTW meant to say Simmed, you sound like you're going a good job of looking after yourself. Where abouts are you though, I wouldn't mind betting that there might be an OS'er near to you who could help you out?
