British Gas Cheapest?

Had a salesman call this evening from BG saying he could save me money (cant they all!). In his calculations against my current suppliers, it looked as though the savings were £18 a month for gas and electric combined. Quite a saving I thought.

As I had signed to a new supplier only a few months ago I had to check to see if the £50 incentive I had received would be repayable so gave them a call. They asked who I was thinking of changing to and gave me their version of the comparison and no saving was to be had. On closer inspection, BG was comparing their best rate against my current suppliers standard rate so not really a like for like comparison. No wonder the salesman was in a hurry to get me to sign. Needless to say I didnt, but whilst on the phone my current did offer me £50 to stay with them, so half an hour of listening to rubbish from BG wasnt a complete waste of time. But goes to show if you dont look closely at the facts and figures you are given you can end up changing suppliers and either not save money or even worse end up paying more.

He kept saying he would put the order through but I wouldnt be obliged to go through with the order and could cancel within 14 days. I declined the offer and think I will just take the £50. Much easier!

Just be careful because sometimes these sales people sign you up anyway and will even forge your signature if they have to.

They all try the same trick, trouble is there are many consumers out there that are stupid enough to lap up all the sales pitch, when a little simple maths would reveal that at best more often than not , if there are any savings to be made, then it is very very little, especially when compared to your current provider's other options.
I'm with BG , last year OVO looked so cheap that in effect I would be getting free electric for a year, on contacting OVO, they wanted like 20% more than what i was already paying.

Salesmen wouldn't offer their best rate - they are all online.

Ignore what both suppliers said and get yourself on one of the comparison sites to find out for yourself.

Would you really expect a doorstep saleperson's offer not to be (allegedly) the cheapest available on the market?

Don't even speak to cold callers. They lie and you've got no comeback.

Do you your own research and make your own decision in your own time.
  • BG sales rep will not be able to save you £18 a month, they can only sell you standard rate, or online saver 3, so unless you're on a really uncompetite rate with current provider, the savings quoted by the bg rep will not materialise. BG can only claim to be the cheapest provider for electric if you use around 3300kwh electric and you are on your current providers standard rate, and ytou are changing to BG's standard tariff, of their range of tariffs, dual fuel, they are very middle of the road in terms of market position, as gas costs are high, offsetting their low electric rates.
