Wireless weak in next room

I have (for a couple of years now) used an Edimax EW-7318USG WiFi USB Turbo Wireless Adapter 4Dbi on my PC in the next room to my router and its crap, only 3 signal bars out of 5.

What should I be using this century please? Much obliged.

Just an aside what is the real problem? Try www.speedtest.net on the PC next door room and see what the speeds are then reported. In my kitchen at best I get 2/3 bars but still get 6.2 Mb unless the neighbours aren't using their pc's and bu**er the contention up. Wireless even if it is supposed to be "N" upto to 300Mbs will only ever be as fast the speed you get from the router to the Exchange ?

Problem is the signal hangs when eg. playing a video via Youtube, which is very annoying. Whereas in the living room it doesn't.

I'll try the speedtest and report back, thanks.

3 of 5 bars of signal in itself shouldn't be an issue. However, interference from other wifi could be. Run inssider on the pc in question and see if it helps you pick a better wifi channel to use:-

Also, have you ever run an optimiser prog on said pc, like automz ultimate tweaker, or even the internet connection part of tuneup utilities ?? Both can help optimise your pc's setup so you don't lose any speed due to the pc itself.

Would you benefit from using wireless N ?? Without trying it it's almost impossible to say, you could even find it's worse to the pc, depends on what materials are between the router and the wifi dongle, eg. brick, breeze-block, plasterboard, plumbing, electrical wiring, etc., some materials will attenuate 5GHz more than they would 2.4GHz

    Euugghhh !!!

However, promising, as your upload is unchanged, suggesting the problem may be more to do with the pc itself. Try inssider first, and see if its down to a wifi channel. In fact, if the one in the same room as the router is also wifi, run inssider on that too..it may be that the "router room" is further away from a potentially clashing wifi source and is therefore not affected, whereas the "slow room" is being blatted by the other wifi signal.

I should be most happy with that but....

Try using inssider as suggested above by GJack you may have interference . Mind you the back room might be 500meters from the front and 2 feet from the neighbours ;)

EDIT : the front room I meant missed the dire back room
