That's because you didn't. If it's not important, why bring it up?

Hiscox also provide DOC extension for named drivers.

I'm deadly serious. It's supremely relevant if you don't actually need to use the cover.

You asked the question, so I'm guessing you need to use the cover. I asked why the cover was required - a question you have yet to answer. If you need the cover, I'm asking why? If you don't need it, stop wasting everyone's time.

Slightly off topic, the sooner DOC doesn't exist, the better. It creates more problems than it's worth. If a couple of big insurers would only withdraw it then the rest might follow suit. If you want to drive a vehicle you have to be named on a policy or covered by that policy. Least of all it will stop a lot of people having to ask dumbass questions.

I disagree completely, it can be very useful in emergency situations (where phoning up to be listed on the policy may not be practical, such as if registered keeper of the car was in a life threating way then you can take over).

Remember when one of the biggest insurer Norwich Union / Aviva tried to do this, they had to reinstate DOC in the end.

Yeah very easy to do that late at night when your insurer customer service is CLOSED and you need to drive your friend car cause he/she isn't feeling well!

Also NOT very insurer will add on just any named driver (whether on the existing policy or short term) as they may not fit their underwriting criteria due to age, group rating of car, etc.

This forum is all about giving advice to people who need it.

However I would say some people should really perform a search of this forum before asking the SAME questions over and over again (NOT referring to the op here)! Such as "Why has my car insurance increased soo much?", "Has everybody else's car insurance increased?" etc.

Why? The point of it is for use in emergency situations not all the time.

If I know that someone was going to drive my car regularly I would insure them on it fully however having been in situations where other drivers have been needed then it's useful.

Most of these occasions have been short for example moving around on the drive using the public highway when someone needs to go off in an emergency but there are young children in the house who are in the bath, but on the rare occasion they have involved a 50 mile drive due to a sport's injury.

The only people I allow to drive my car and vice versa are ones who can afford to buy a new car if they write it off. So for example I wouldn't drive someone's porsche but would drive their micra.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

I know what DOC is for, but I would still question it's application. I'd welcome anyone to give me an example where it would have to be used without an alternative.

Say your friend is driving (who is the registered keeper of the car) in the middle of nowhere your friend suddenly becomes ill and needs to go to the hospital. You can then take over driving (possibly saving their life).

Also as I've said NOT very insurer will add on just any named driver (whether on the existing policy or short term) as they may not fit their underwriting criteria due to age, group rating of car, etc.

Nice example, but not brilliant. Call an ambulance. Call a taxi. Call anyone. And in reality DOC wouldn't even need to apply here. If it were absolutely a question of life and death no-one in their right mind would give a toss about indemnity. Can you come up with any others because "suddenly falling ill in the middle of nowhere and not being able to drive" doesn't strike me as any reason for maintaining DOC as part of an insurance policy?

In a life and death situation - the sort that people always find themselves in when they need to drive another car - I would maintain that I wouldn't care whether or not I was insured to drive a vehicle. You're talking about penalty points and higher premiums???? Jesus wept. Someone's life is at stake here. It's life and death. I asked for the example, you brought it up. It's not my fault that it's a terrible example. I stand by what I said. Maintaining DOC solely for the purposes of your improbable example is ridiculous. The question is, why DOES it still exist?
  • Don't think it exists on many policies nowadays. People used to take the mick. Insured on a shed and driving decent cars instead.
