Madeira has great walking in the mountains, along cliffs and headlands and on the Levadas. Re animals there are whale and dolphin watching trips, but some parts of the year are better than others.

I can heartily recommend the Sunflower book as a great starter for car tours and walking.

It's a bit corny but I enjoyed the toboggan ride down from Monte http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmGD021ofBQ

The botanical garden is worth a walk around.

Madeira tends to attract rather an older crowd so there are not a lot of adventurous things to do really.

Well worth hiring a car for a few days, but expect to get lost if you are based in Funchal (a nightmare place to drive around!) - Strawberryautos are recommended (we used them and no probs).

Nuns Valley is a must, plenty of walking in the mountains or along levadas, some of the highest sea cliffs in the world on the south coast. We were hirty somethings when we went and really enjoyed it, definately somewhere we'll be going back to.
