Electricty 47 Units per day??
Hi,
For the past few years we have been recieveing excessive electricity bills from scottish power. According to my meter I have used 47 units in the past 48 24 hours. In this time we have used the shower twice, the washing machine once, made a few cups of tea and watched TV. We have no tumble drier, no dishwasher, no plasma screen TV, no unusual appliances.
Scottis Power have just tried to convince me that this is perfectly acceptable and they are not willing to send out an engineer.
This is a 3 bedroom apartment, can anyone in a similar living arrangement tell me how much usage they have per day?
Am I right in thinking this bill is beyond excessive? I am massively in arrears because I can't afford to pay these bills and I seem to be hitting a brick wall when talking to my supplier.

I am not sure if you mean that you have used these units in 24 hours 48 times or if you mean that you have used the units in 48 hours X 2 ie 48 hours.
I live in a 3 bedroom Apartment and I have storage heating as there is no gas. A couple of years ago I was asked to check the units I was using for 7 days at the same time every day. 80% of my electricity bill is on the economy 7. At this time I was with Atlantic and I had a larger than usual bill.
What I found was that I only used 6-8 units day time use but between 11-15 units economy 7.
I had a new Meter fitted prior to this and they did say I was using more than was normal.
My heating water etc is all on the night use. We have a laundry in our development so have no washing machine or tumble drier.
Dishwasher used x 2-3 times a week and the usual light TV cooker and all the normal appliances.
Last year my total consumption was 15,100 units in total,
I recall many years ago we had a problem after a new meter was fitted and the Electricity Board came and fitted some sort of meter for 7 days and there was a fault but that would be more than 20 years ago.0 -
Sorry ignore the 48 it was just supposed to say 24 hours0

What heating do you have? also what heats water?0

I seem to use about 10 units a day and I was concerned because it's more than I used in the last house using almost the same appliances. But I think maybe I don't need to worry too much. I use much the same sort of things as you do. In my previous house it averaged out at 8 units per day.0

As said what is your heating?
If its just normal use and you have gas CH then yes thats very high. I use around 13 kwh per day average over 30/31 days at mo with gas ch. Sometimes thats two showers so could be 14 thats with 2 adaults and currently 3 students0 -

How many people are living there? On the face of it, it looks high but not exceptional usage, and it's certainly possible. If you have someone (or two or three) who 'feels the cold' and turns on a heater for most of the day, then that would be a possible explanation. My current use is around 30kwh/day, but it goes up to 60/day in the winter due to storgae heaters (having said that, our quite large house is kept very cool except for the living room heated by a woodburner). Summer runs at about 15/20kwh/day with no heating - i am careful not to waste energy.
Do you have a kitchen full of recessed spotlights? That could be 500w or more on many hours per day, so could contribute say 6kwh to your total - but mainly it's heating (inc water heating) which is the biggest contributer.0 -
Hi elektro
You can arrange for a check meter to be installed at a cost of around £50. This meter will run alongside your current meter and record the same electricity over at least a 2 week period. Your current meter can record between 2.5% fast and 3.5% slow. If the results show that your meter is recording within these parameters then your meter is fine.
Alternatively, you can arrange for an independant electrician to come out and check the internal wiring to make sure there are no faults, or you can purchase an electricity monitor which will record your consumption on real time so you will be able to switch appliances off and monitor the cost as appliances are switched back on. This appliance might help you identify what is using a large percentage of your electricity. Click on the link below and then go to Web Shop to see more information on the energy monitors and its benefits:

That seems very high, I have to say. I live with my OH and in the last bill we had covering the Summer period (17 July to 30 October) we used 433 kWh in 106 days, so almost exactly 4 kWh/day. 2-bed back to back, gas heating and cooking. Low-energy bulbs almost everywhere and LED spots of approx 2W in the kitchen.0 -

Our house is all electric, plus there are either 4 or 5 of us here, two adults here all day, 3 in the holidays, and 2 teenage girls. all energy efficient lighting and appliances. As usual, everyone has a laptop, and they seem to be on for many hours each evening. A surprising big user is the xbox360, which I think I measured at 300w (plus the big tv, another couple of hundred), but that's only on in the holidays.
Electricity seems a little expensive, but where i gain over gas is in pretty well zero maintenance costs, and the storage heaters I got at cost price fifteen years ago (eight of them) still work fine and even look OK(ish).
All in all, i think we get good value from our usage.0
