Hi there,
I wondered if you could help me out.
I have a PC with broadband through NTL that I use for net access. Sometimes I fancy surfing in comfort on laptop and was wondering if I installed NTL software onto the laptop and simply plugged in the modem would it be that simple to switch?

If you use NTL with an ethernet connection, it should just work without software. Or you could get a wireless router and use both whenever you want.. You'll need a cable/dsl router, not adsl.
e.g. http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=539
if the laptop isn't wireless, you'll need a usb or pc card wireless adapter as well.

I have NTL at home at am desktop PC is connected to broadband via Devolo network plugs.
I have a laptop for work as do my other half.
We can both connect at the same time to NTL using a wireless router.
You could also just use a CAT5 cable from you laptop to your cable modem
Few points to clarify
Do you and other mebers of your family want to be connected to the internet at the same time. if so you are probably best going wireless and getting yourself a DSL wireless router.
If you go wireless you will need to check if your laptop has a built in wireless card as well as one for your desktop
If you just want to do the odd bit of surfing on your laptop, your best bet would be to get a long CAT5 RJ45 cable from your laptop to your NTL modem.
Just need to check that your laptop has a Network card built in
Hop all the above makes some sense0 -
>would it be that simple to switch?<
Not quite, IIRC the cable-modem has to be commissioned to recognise the unique MAC address of each computer's network card. You may have to reboot the modem after switching connections too.
You'll find life is a LOT simpler if you buy 4-port wireless router, and use that between the PC and laptop. (It'll also give some additional protection with a built-in NAT firewall). The trick is to 'clone' the MAC address of your PC into the outgoing port on the router, so that the modem is unaware of what you've done
