bt master socket query

hi there,

i have been having problems with my broadband over the last 2 months , in the day the sync would be between 4.3 - 4.5 then at some point after midnight this should drop to 3.2 - 3.3 , the router does not disconnect at all.

if i then decide to re-sync during the day back up to 4.3 - 4.5 , only do this like once every 4 days

i have had 3 bt engineers here in 8 days all say there is no issue at my end.

and that a lift and shift should be done .

A manager from the post office rung me back and said this can be done if you agree to possible changers, as everything in your property is your responsibility.

i quick pointed out i only have the one socket and that is bt responsibility up to and including the master socket, anything after that is mine. am i right ?

but how can i possible have a fault when i have had 3 bt engineers in 8 days say there is no fault at my place .

are they trying to use scare tactics because they have to pay for the lift and shift ?

many thanks

OK on only one socket but are you running the router on a plug in extension?

Your router must have dropped the connection for it to show a different sync rate as SRA isn't supported by the vast majority of UK ISPs (Only UKO and only with certain routers sfaik).

ADSL operates on the same frequencies as MW radio which comes in stronger at night and will interfere if there is any way it can get into the signal path. Usually this is via a ring wire (which is why I asked about use of any plugin extensions) but a long length of overhead lines (100m+) won't be good news either should you have that

It can be a nightmare trying to ascertain/prove where a fault lies (particularly if the fault isn't found!)

Is your router plugged in to the engineers' socket behind the face-plate on the master socket? I think that a fault at the engineer's socket to the exchange would be BT's responsibility, whereas a fault between the faceplate and your domestic wiring would be your responsibility.

I would definitely double-check that you don't have any other phone sockets or equipment (like a disused extension cable attached to the faceplate, like the cable in the photo above). Obviously you'll need a microfilter attached to the line (as shown).

It might also be worth disconnecting the ring circuit to see if that helps.

Maybe try using a different microfilter and router to see if the fault lies there...?

hi there i have the new type socket (no ring circuit) , the router has always been plugged into the test socket . i have a netgear dg834g v3 , when the sync rate drops the connection time just continues. when i checked this will po they also tell me i have not had a drop in connection even though the sync rate as dropped?

when the first engineer came he changed the socket and also fitted a bt open reach filtered face plate (is this there responsibility as they fitted it ?) , which i am now plugged into

have used different router/filters same outcome
  • Out of interest was the broadband connection problem free before these recent months of issues?

Have you had any electrical wiring work done recently (or fitted new lamps, lights?). Reason I ask is that I had mega issues with my ADSL when the Christmas lights went up last year (especially the flashing ones). Soon as they were on the ADSL was prone to losing sync.

Also has similar issue with a power supply on a lamp which caused issues.

Care to post your router line statistics?

I had a no connection problem, and persuading BT to do a tie pair shift took the better part of three months.

by tomorrow morning the noise will be between 12 - 15 , and a sync rate of 3200 - 33000

Looks like a noisy line, have you/BT tried as quiet line test. With 39db line attenuation you should be capable of getting around 10Mbps.
Routers normally sync with a noise margin of 7db, the fact that yours re syncs at night suggests its very susceptible to radio interference as mentioned by an earlier poster.

Looks like you need the lift and shift, is BT your ISP?

Or maybe the line is set to fastpath/ with high snr i.e 100 which would would give the noise around 10+

I have Dgteam firmware on my router with snr set to 10 because im so far from exchange

    > dg834g v3

Unlike most variants of the DG834 the V3 uses a TI chipset which can be a problem on some exchanges. My son had one and swapping it out for a different router improved his ADSL considerably. Can you borrow a different router to try? (cough Argos cough 16 day returns policy cough cough)
