internet freezing n playing up

Hey, dunno if anyone will be able to help, but....
when i log onto the pc after a restart, everything seems to load fine - except when I click on the internet - it doesn't open, and my pc freezes. it stays like this for about 20 mins, then the windows welcome tune plays and the internet opens, and everything runs fine!
Anyone got any clues? I'm using Windows XP in the background Zone Alarm and Avast Antivirus is running. I'm so stuck, and gettin impatient as its happening more frequently - like after I log on and stuff

My 1st thoughts are that something is taking ages to load. When you next start from cold, keep an eye on the hard drive light on your base unit and don't do anything until it's stopped flashing, then try browsing. If that works ok we'll have to find what's taking so long to load.
