Overnight Location Postcode..?

Hi people -

I'm a student trying to find a reasonable insurance quote for my vw polo. The trouble I'm having is with the portion of the quote forms that ask the postcode of where the car is kept overnight (I'm studying in south east london which, for obvious reasons, puts the price up by often more than double when I put in my london postcode...).
My question is - is the purpose of providing the overnight location simply in case of theft from that location? For example, if i were in an accident which was my fault and someone claimed against my insurer, would they still not pay out simply because I wasn't entirely truthful about the overnight location of the car, or would they ignore that portion of my details because they have no bearing on the accident itself?? I.e I could just accept the risk of theft, and if it were stolen, that would be it and I would lose the car (its fairly low value anyway). I'm afraid the answer might be simply that if any incorrect detail is found they will use it to try and avoid paying - any thoughts??

Thanks in advance!

:)

    This.

The price reflects the risk. You must answer all questions honestly else your policy may be voided (expensive mistake). Anything else is fraud.

  • hi - thanks for reply. but i suppose what i mean is, do questions relating to where the car is kept overnight not just directly relate to its theft? rather than accidents etc? E.g someone living in the country, and paying a lower premium, could just as easily have an accident in the centre of london as someone who lives in london - whereas their risk of car theft would be very different. If I were to simply accept that risk and understand that I wouldn't be able to claim in the event of its theft, then that should work right? as long as the details pertaining to me as a driver and the details of the car itself are correct in case of accident?

An Insurance Policy is a contract based on "Utmost goodfaith". If you intentionally mislead your Insurer eg by declaring the wrong post code they can avoid the policy (Void the policy). This will mean the policy is cancelled from the start of the policy. If the Insurer decide you intentionally missled them they can retain the entire premium.

The potential consequences of you giving the wrong post code are as above with the addition of the Insurer will normally be obliged to deal with any fault accident claims against you BUT they will then seek reimbersment from you for their outlay. In addition you will have on record that you have had a policy voided which will make it very difficult )Very very expensive) for you to obtain any type of Insurance in the future including home and life insurance.
  • ok thanks for the advice - looks like that isn't happening then.

    cheers
