Council Tax Arrears

hi
I have fallen behing by £38 on my council tax and because I've had 2 reminder letters already this year are threatening to take me to court or pay in full. If i pay the arears in the next day or so will they let me go back to installments as i cant afford to pay it in full and i dont want to end up in court either. my local council is Bury,Lancs if anyone has had a similar situation

I think if you actually manage to talk to someone and pay the arrears then you will be allowed to continue the monthly payments. Council Tax and its arrears have their own rules, so the letters and notices that get sent out tend to be on the "agressive" side IMHO, but they have to do that to be consistent and cover themselves for the cases that do go to court.

A few years ago, we got into arrears with our council tax and it was quite a bit more than £38. We phoned them up and came to an arrangement to pay. As bob says, they need to cover themselves if it ever went to court, so whilst their demand letters can be quite frightening, as long as you don't ignore them and phone them to discuss and make payment they should be okay.

Your lucky, they took me to court even though I didnt owe a penny. Bury council can be pains in the booty.
