I just thought people would like to know.., after having a WII dvd drive become none working just out of warranty (altho it was dodgy for quite a while beforehand). This is a common problem with WII consoles from what I can hear (my son is possibly a bit rough with his consoles it seems). I have bought a new one (using Quidco, £159.99 plus free accessory pack and free delivery so saved quite a bit there thank goodness altho I was only just in time to get some of these savings - plus two £10 vouchers from argos). I have also bought a Wode Jukebox http://http://www.modsupplier.com/catalog/wode-jukebox-wii-mod-chip-usb-loader-p-326.html

This allows u to play game backups from a USB hard drive if u have one lying around (so the DVD should never become non working as its not used because u don't need to load game DVDs anymore altho it does need to be working for the games to load.., so no use for the broken WII console I already have). As this also means scratches on game discs won't be a problem (I will be keeping them locked away lol) it was well worth the £70 cost for the Wode Jukebox for me to make sure this WII will be working for as long as possible. It also has other uses.

I have been looking for over a week, couldn't find one in stock anywhere but the above supplier does have them in stock and only charges £2.63 delivery even tho its coming from Australia lol. They also have the best installation videos I have seen and when I had a question used their online customer support so I was given an instant answer. Brilliant service (altho will have to wait 8 days or so for delivery).

It might be worth considering for people that have experienced the same problems I have.

Although not a straightforward process, you can achieve similar results using free software:

    http://usbloadergx.koureio.net/

This allows you to copy the games you own onto a USB hard drive and then select the one required without needing to use the DVD drive in the Wii.

    Thanks

  • I believe (not being able to say for sure as I haven't tried it).., that there is a risk of bricking your WII using other processes. With the Wode Jukebox.., its a fair bit easier. I'm probably not IT literate enough to try something else, unfortunately (altho u do need to be able to take a WII apart as per the installation instructions given on the site).

I guess it is horses for courses - I know at least 5 people who have successfully modified their Wii consoles to use USB Loader GX without any problems but as previously stated, it is not an easy process.

The advantage of this approach is that you do not need to open up your Wii console.

I would urge anyone interested in doing this to look at both options and decide if the extra money involved buying the Wode jukebox is worth it for the reduced complexity.

    Thanks
