If I have a column in excel 2007, column C, where some of the cells contain the word mortgage, how can I get the equivalent cell in column E to have a red background?
C2 contains mortgage E2 has a red background
C10 contains mortgage E10 has a red background
and so on
Frank.

Select the range of cells where you want the formatting to appear (e.g. E2:E10)
Go to Home tab > Conditional Formatting > New Rule...
Select Use a formula to determine which cells to format
In the formula box type =IF(C2="mortgage",1,0)
Click the Format... button and select your preferred fill colour
Click OK etc

Select the range you want the conditional formatting to cover e.g. E2:E20. Create a new rule in Conditional Formatting and select 'Use a formula to determine which cells to format'. In the formula box enter =$C2="mortgage" then click format to select how you want the cell to look then ok. If mortgage isn't the only word in C2 then you can use =MATCH("*mortgage*",$C2,0). The wildcards means any variation of mortgage will be highlighted e.g. mortgages, full mortgage etc0
