DVD's wont Play!!!! What am I missing?

Im sure this is not going to be difficult to amswer, for those who know.
I recently purchased a Dazzle Instant DVD recorder to transfer footage from my mini dv camcorder to to DVD ( -R ) Now this was a doddle, very easy to do and plays back great on my PC dvd player. The burned DVD's also play fine on my daughters portable DVD player but not on the main DVD player in our lounge. I've tried it on friends DVD player (a sony) and it worked fine, on a TV/DVD combi, this also worked fine, but on a Toshiba DVD recorder it wouldnt play. SO ... my question is what do I need to make sure that our soon to be purchased new DVD recorder has, ie plays JPEG? MPEG? MP3? DIVX?? whatever that is, what is it that the players that played it OK had that the ones that couldn't play it didn't have??? Know what I mean??

I dont want to go buy this new DVD recorder and find out that it wont play these DVD either. Thankyou.

Some players can playback more types of dvds than others, it's as simple as that. When purchasing a dvd player, pay careful attention to what it can cope with.
For instance, you have burned you camcorder footage to dvd-r, so you at least want a dvd player that can play dvd-r dvds.

There are loads of sites for you to read up on all things dvd. Here's your starter for 10.

  • Thanks for the pointer. Our lounge DVD player is supposed to play -R so it makes me think that it is something to do with the format that the DVD's were burned in that the DVD player doesnt like.

Did you "finalize" the disk? That may affect playback on older machines.

If your lounge player is fairly old it may just not like the disc you've burned the DVD to. By this I don't mean if it's +R or -R but the brand and perhaps the speed the disc is capable of burning at. We have had similar problems with our old Wharfdale DVD player with some discs.

Less likely to have problems with a new model but just to be sure take one of your DVDs with you when you go to view/buy and try it on a display model. :D
  • Thanks to all who took the trouble to reply, much appreciated. I have 'accidently' found a soloution. The camcorder to DVD disks showed up as VIDEO-TS and through Nero Vision, I created a DVD-Video from my DVD that wouldnt play and it 'automatically converted' it to play on my DVD player . It works, not exactly sure why or what I have really done but its working and im delighted.

Ive had this Nero 7 Ultra for a while and had a play around with it late last night, this being the result. Thanks to All.
