Replacement glazed unit for velux window, howe much?

Hi folks,

Just noticed tonight that the glazed glass on the velux window is cracked, and wondering what is roughly a reasonable price to get it replaced? The window measures approx 40x40 inch and the replacement glazed unit is rought 38x38 inches

Not too sure how the crack came to be there, thought maybe some kid maybe lobbed a stone at it over the halloween but probably not. Maybe due to the extra forces on it over the last 20 years when closing it shut. Because of this should I ask the replacement guy to put any insulation etc?

Thanks very much for any adivce,

Worth a read... you might be able to DIY it!

Plus you can get a quote... although I'd guess it wont be the cheapest available (might be wrong if they have contractors for your area though).

Thanks for reply, I have just checked and the glass on the outside of the window is not cracked, its the inside glass on the lower right hand side of window horizonal and vertical cracks of 10x8 inch approx meeting up like a aquare.. I have put a window sticker on the inside glass to paper over the 2 cracks to do a temporary fix, had a few heavy showers here but since its not the outside glass no rain coming in. The velux solution comapny don't do installations where I live.

Could a local glazer do this I wonder or is the glass in a velux done in a specialised way?

Is there any way that the shock from fireworks going off nearby could cause this?

    thanks again

I don't think the glazing is anything special, your local glazier will be able to supply a suitable replacement sealed unit.

We bought some of a similar size 7 years ago, cost was £40, add on inflation over 7 years...........
  • We'd charge about £145 - £160, make sure you you get safety glass, you can DIY, older Velux windows often used to have 3mm glass so if it's an older window make sure you change the spacer size to allow for 4mm glass
