Buying curtains - money saving tips?

Having moved into our victorian terrace last December we're gradually working our way through the house and decorating/improving.
We need curtains for a set of French doors, the wife has found some material she likes and got a quote to have it made into a curtain. Quote came back as £270

So any top tips for saving money, sites to use to find ready made curtains etc (although door/window) is large so may need to be made.

Dunelm Mill have lots of choice and will make up for you if you want. Ikea do huge ready made curtains, 3 metres long, great for doors.. I tend to buy from them and cut them down / sew them together or otherwise adapt. Argos, lots of other catalogues, Wilkos - all do cheap curtains.

In our area there's a couple of small ads in the local paper from people who will do this, I used one once for my workplace and they were great - they had a little cottage industry going. Might be worth looking there, or on those big noticeboards in supermarkets too. Ask around at work too, I knew of someone who did this for workmates.
  • She just had a spot on making your own curtains...

Just got some ready mades from TJ Hughes. Very good value.
  • I had a similar problem when we moved house recently and the quotes were too high.... lucky for mw Tesco direct had nice lined curtains for sale at the time. I have 2 windows which are 12' wide and 6' long. So just bought 2 sets of curtains for each window and sewed them together... they look fantastic and during the day you cant even tell there is a stitch in the middle!!

So measure you're windows and look around online -you'll find that you have lot of choices...

    Hope this helps.....

I got some really nice (lined) ones from Chiltern Mills. My french doors measured 12ft wide by 83" drop. I picked the material from a large range and they made them up for me, and also made me 4 cushion covers to match.Total cost was £130, that was a year ago.
