Shopkeepers liability

Today whilst in the butchers shop I caught my jeans on a sharp edge on the steel counter which put a inch long rip in them, is the shopkeeper liable for this damage and how much compensation should I expect for ruining a £65-70 pair of part worn 501's.

Thanks

Jon

I thought ripped jeans were trendy- perhaps the butcher has increased their value, and, therefore, you owe him money!!!

Absolutely; butcher should be charging you.

You would have to prove negligence - although it sounds as if the edge had worn down or something if it was able to damage your clothes.

His liability to you would be limited to the value of a secondhand pair of Levis.

I remember sitting on a bench in a pub garden and ripped part of my coat (similarly priced) on a nail

It never occured to me to expect the pub owner to pay for any repair to it (mind you, I was taught how to darn etc when in school)

unless you called the shop owner's attention to it at the time it happened, I wouldn't hold out hope of getting anything....if not pointed out at the time.....you may have ripped them anywhere....so don't expect too much advice until you confirm what action you took when in the shop as it actually happened...

Good God. Either the Trolls are getting worse or the fact it's halfterm has something to do with this run of silly posts.

I wonder if the OP could claim for Mental Anguish?
