@tretts77 - One more thing, if I use the 7.1 output but I only have a 5.1 amp what happens to the other two channels?! Is there a 5.1 setting?

i have a HD sound capable amp that can do 7.1 but only use 5.1 .

7.1 sound gets sent down my HDMI lead to the amp, but i only choose to output HD sound in 5.1 .

i would assume you just hook up the six analogue you need and then leave unwanted ones . what happens to the other 2 channels , well i guess they just don't get outputted .

let me get my instruction manual out the attic in a bit and see if says anything special about this, but the whole reason for the Sony going to the trouble and expense of putting the multi channel outputs on this Blu Ray player was for people with older amps without HDMI .

the guys at your local Richer Sounds will be able to give a proper answer , but i very much doubt it will be a problem .
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

Dont ever ask RS for advice
Most times they guess their answers (or just try to sell you what THEY want you to have)

    Just to round this off:
I found a Panasonic DMP-BD80 ex-display in my local Comet for half-price (came with everything including full warranty apart from the box). It's got the 7.1 outputs on it and works fantastically with my TV. So thanks again for everyone's help. Glad I didn't go for a PS3 in the end.
