Heart Mumours in Children

Hiya, Just wondering if anyones child has had a heart mumour, and how you dealt with it.

My 2 year old, has just been referred to the hospital with a suspected heart mumour, and obviously i'm very worried. I know people say dont worry, it will be fine. But obviously you cant help but worry when its your child.

What happens when she is does go to the hospital etc...

Thanks for any help x

  • Heart murmers are often nothing to worry about. My ex husband found out that he had one when he was 22 - he'd never known before then and has never had any trouble with it. My niece (my side of the family, so no blood relation to my ex) had one when she was little, but has since grown out of it.

I agree that you will worry regardless, it's a part of being a parent. The specialist will be able to give you more information. You might also want to contact one of the heart charities for support. Some can put you in touch with parents of children who have the same condition.

Hope everything goes well for you

my son was diagnosed with a heart murmur at birth, when he was a few months old they sent him for an ECG and said he would more than likely grow out of it. Of course i was worried and got a scare researching but he is now 8 and does everything any other child does and doesnt seem bothered by it at all!
Hope things go well for you x

  • my youngest little boy was born with a syndrome called cornelia de lange syndrome where heart defects are very common, we was told when he was 10 weeks old that he had an asd and a murmur, we were referred to a specialist who told us his heart was 'horribly healthy' and he didnt have an asd but did have a murmur when i questioned what that meant he told me he just had a very noisy heart, all murmurs are different but manageable. sorry for waffling must be that time of the night lol

My daughter has a serious heart condition.

When she goes to hospital they generally do an ECG and an ultrasound. Nothing too scary.

  • I was born with a heart murmur and grew out of it although my GP 'heard' it through his steposcope (sorry if i spelt this wrong) when i had a chest infection a couple of years ago. The murmur I have has been described as a 'creaky gate' between my heart and lungs. I can honestly say it has never caused me any problems and i'm in my 40s now!

The only ever tests i have ever had done was ECGs every few years. I'm sure your son will be fine - good luck

1969, I was born with heart murmur. Born 6 weeks early by cesarian as i had stopped growing in the womb, weighed less than half a bag a sugar.

Doctors told my parents not to let me run around like a loony etc...

40 and 3/4 years later and i don't have any heart issues. Although when i was 24 and pregnant with DS the murmur opened again, and then after the birth promptly closed again, no medical intervention at all.

Medically we have come so far since 1969, so don't worry too much and please don't wrap your child in cotton wool for their lives, 17 I left home, i felt so suffocated.

Hi, My son was diagnosed with one a year and a half ago. He was 3. We were referred to the specialist, who did all the checks and it turns out that it is benign and nothing at all to worry about. It is on his medical records for interest only. I understand your anxieties, as we went through them too while waiting for the appointment x x Please remember that it is highly likely to be nothing at all to worry about.
