Very slow computer :(

Options
Hi all.

My computer is coming up to 18 months old. I remove all the temp internet history etc. What else can I do to speed it up a bit?

Is it a case of something I can do for myself or is there a free program I can use to speed up my computer?

Thank you.

Run CCleaner then defrag and keep anti virus up to date. this generally works for me and is definately a solid start.

EDIT: If, once you have done the above, your still getting problems come back and let us know :-)

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

If you haven't already you can delete old restore points. It wont speed up your system much, but will free up a lot of disk space.

    Hi

download Auslogics Registry cleaner, it will do a better job than Ccleaner on your registry. Its just a simple series of clicks and it will complete tuning up you registry. If that does'nt work you need to use Ccleaner and see what is running on start Up. List here all that is running and I will help

    Best of Luck

Best to check your system is clear of anything nasty first before running registry cleaners, follow RIKs advice in post #3.

What has gone slow with it? Is it just browsing the Internet and noticing web pages slow to load? Is starting programs taking longer than normal and do you see your hard disk light constantly on (and hard disk whirring away) when you start programs or when your browser is launched? Also have you installed many applications recently?

What operating system do you have?

    How much RAM?

What's the hard-disk size, and how much space do you have left?

As above, first check that you have no nasties lurking, and that your hard disk is not too full.

If that checks out OK, then - and this is a very broad generalisation - adding memory can make a big difference. It's pretty cheap these days. Go to Crucial Memory where you can find the right memory chips for your PC. Their prices are also pretty good, although I ended up buying mine from Amazon as it was slightly cheaper, but it depends on your particular requirements.

This is not a blanket solution - it may be that you have loads of memory available - but if you're using pretty much all you've got then it's a quick and cheap fix. It speeded up my 10 year old machine no end :-)
