Over Cladding/ Capping Fascia & Soffits Work OK?

HI

Had a quote for new Fascias/soffits and guttering, but the guy wanted to put the new pvc Fascias over the Existing Wooden Fascias (Over Cladding) the wood is not in bad condition, Is this a reliable way on fitting Fascias or should the wood be taken off first.

Anyone that has has new fascia fitted by overcladding the existing wood would be a great help of their experiences.

I deliberately overclad my fascias and barge boards not many years after I built the house and before there was any noticeable rot. It's been there now for about 20 years. If there had been a lot of rot visible I would probably not over boarded it but would have removed the wood first.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

I had plastic facia boards put over my existing wooden ones.

    Two reasons really.

First I didn't want to sand down and paint over the previous colour (blue) to the white colour I wanted because it would have taken me ages. Then there is the maintenance of it.............

Secondly, while the wooden facia was in good shape it would be better to fit the plastic facias before any signs of rot.

It would be a bigger job to have to take down the existing wooden boards before fitting the new stuff.

Did the new fascias and soffits completely seal in your old wooden fascias/soffits Or was there some sort ventilation grills added say in the new pvc soffits.

No ventilation grills were put in. I had all the tiles removed from the roof and then had breathable felt put on.
The tiles were then replaced with some new ones for any broken ones.
The building inspector passed it. So I am happy with it.

The roofing contractor put the fixings into the roof trusses and other solid timber to attach the plastics.

andrew-b hits the nail on the head. Over cladding is a bodge to save money. I had mine removed about 8 years ago and had the aluminium guttering preformed on a machine in the back of the van so no joins and no leaks. The whole job is still perfect. The house opposite was overclad just about the same time and 2 pieces have come loose already, I assume from wood rotting.

No don't get your fascias overclad. Wait another year and save up the money to get it done properly.

Of course it will. Even if the wood turned to weetabix the fascia will still look good. You can't see the underneath!!!
