How to Stop Cats Mess in Garden?

Hi, my irresponsible neighbour has never bothered to get any of her cats neutered and so they keep breeding. With this has come the problem of having the cats go to the toilet all over my garden and driveway. Each day there are at least 5 new messes for me to clear up and it's really starting to get on my nerves...especailly when I've not seen it and then stand in it!

I have a dog who for some strange reason enjoys eating this mess and I'm concerned that this could give him a stomach upset etc. I try to clear it up before he gets to it but this isn't always possible.

Please can anyone advise of an effective way to stop cats doing this in my garden, (a method which must also be dog friendly)?

  • Put lose netting on the top of your fence (so it wont support the cats weight) will stop them getting into the garden...driveway? water pistol?

I've used old coffee ground mixed with orange peel- found it in an old book. Seems to work for most of them- spread it in a line around your garden. Something to do with a dislike of the smell.

Cat poo is actually toxic to dogs so be very careful. Theres a few citrus based reppellants that are reported to work, Also there's Lion Poo.

Also if your neighbour is breeding that many cats and they are a health hazard it may be worth speaking to environmental health.

Burying orange peel just under the soil is supposed to deter cats. Apparently they dislike the smell

    Hi
I know it won't solve your immediate problem, but you could try speaking to your neighbour about charity neutering schemes. Depends what area you are in, but most places have some sort of scheme, sometimes independant of household income. I think their veiw is that the poor things need neutering to help stop the booming cat population from ending up in rescue, so they do whatever they can to persuede people to get it done!

http://mcmnet.cats.org.uk/what-we-do/neutering/ is just one link - try googling in your area

    Good luck
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Thanks Tankgirl. This is a great suggestion except for the fact that my neighbour isn't a very approachable woman. She is on benefits but despite this hasn't taken the cats to the PDSA where I'm sure she'd get this for free or at least with a large discount off the cost of the operations. I think the water pistol idea may help, it's just that they tend to do their business at night when I don't see them. Sneaky :rotfl:

My brother got a battery powered water squirter thing from B&Q I think - it has a little infrared sensor on the front like an alarm and when it detects movement, it squirts.

Not sure how many cats it actually deters because my nephew loves running round in front of it and it's soon empty!
  • I have the same problem with my neighbours cats, and its really getting on my nerves....the cats will do it all over the grass for my kids to step in and theyve started doing it on top of flowers and even on my path and drive, im so mad because they dont do it on their own garden!! One day i caught one of them having a wee stood up (not spraying) and it went everywhere, i was livid!!
Ive tried all sorts but the rain just washes it away again...if you get any advice that works, please do let me know!! xx

I feel for anyone who has this kind of problem, to the OP there seems two issues here....

    1. Irresponsible pet owner who isnt approachable.

My advice would be to contact your local animal charities yourself. I know in this area they will trap, neuter and rehome feral/ownerless cats - perhaps they might help in this way if there are alot of cats, or perhaps they could persuade your neighbour to engage with them.

    2. Cats pooping on your property - even the most loved and cared for kitty poops exactly where it wants too even when it is neutered, usually not on its own garden and no amount of explaining this to kitty cat will make them mend their ways, they just wont listen to ya, no matter how hard you beg them!

I heard that the water shooters are quite good. Is there an area that they favour as a toilet? If there is perhaps you could put a litter tray there for them - I know it shouldnt be your responsibility but honestly, if that is the only way to keep them pooping in one area and make it easy for you to clean, then it's worth a try.

Toms who havent been neutered are a menace, they smell, they fight, they yowl and they half stave themselves during the season of lurve and it aint their fault, if the owner wont neuter them - beg the charities to do it for them - goodluck.
