Through lounge radiator/BTU question

I'm going to replace two old radiators in our through-lounge, one at each end of the room. I've used a few online BTU calculators and the figure comes to around 11000. Am I correct in assuming that 2 radiators of around 5500 BTU will do the job?

Thanks.

Redo the calculations treating the two spaces as separate. What answers do you get then?

I redid the calcs using http://www.trademate.co.uk/Services/HeatLoss/default.asp?_brand=CP
The front part of the room is wider than the back part, and has smaller windows, so the figures came out at 4760 for the front and 4398 for the rear. Should I buy rads just above these figures?

Here's the best heat loss calculator that I know of.

That will allow you to check at different temperatures and better adjusted to your building and how you like it. Remember to put in very low temperatures to see what you need in extremely cold weather. Then go for at least the next one or two radiators up.

Remember that any calculator is not 100% accurate or reliable, it could be some way out so always allow extra and use TRV's to adjust to comfort.

I'd say you need min 5,000 BTU per rad. Are room sizes approx 12' x 12'? You can always turn them down but you can't squeeze more heat out than it can give. So its always sensible to oversize.

  • They're about 12' x 10'. I was thinking of going for a couple of these from B&Q as they have a 15% off voucher knocking about at the weekend. Are they a little over the top at just over 6000 BTU?
    Thanks again.

If you like them go for them.

Beware the retailer using different DeltaT numbers which can make the rad appear to have greater ouput than it really has until you apply the conversion calculation.

We installed a large B&Q Kudox rad a while back and while its not the best finished rad or the best looking for that matter, it was a good price and it does the job perfectly.

Cheers. The B&Q Kudox ones are 6100 BTU, which it says is calculated at T50. Does that sound OK?

Forget about any make of rad's 10 year warranty.

There is so much small print about system water quality, that it will very rarely ever be honored.
