Signing for parcels

Just a general musing - how often do delivery people actually obtain signatures? And who are the most reliable companies? I received 2 items I bought on eBay this morning and their delivery has set me wondering.

One was sent via Parcelforce48, value of approx £40, the delivery bloke didn't ask for a signature. I've just looked online and it says I've signed for it (name wrongly spelt tho) and has a scrawl which is apparently my signature!

The other item, worth about £80, was sent via My Hermes (ugh!) and also says "Signature From Customer" even tho I wasn't asked to sign for it.

If these items had disappeared somewhere would I have had any claim to a refund, or as there was a "signature" would the money just be a loss? I always use City Link to send higher value items as they seem to be quite reputable. The items have always been delivered to the right person and I can see online that they have been signed for, but now I'm wondering if they actually have been or if it's just the drivers doing it themselves!

Anyone got any comments or experiences to share?

firstly, you should maybe complain? Might stop that parcelforce man doing that again?

Secondly; HDNL always ask for signature, Postman (woman actually) does, Next myhermes woman always does...infact everyone does in my experience. Guess it depends on the person delivering

Where I live RM only ever take a sig for special (and even then they don't bother when it comes from the RM shop) most parcel companies do take a sig but i get very very few courier deliveries as I actively choose not to shop with people who use couriers.

At my parents house, the postie (RM) will quite often sign on their behalf and just leave the parcel (my Dad used to work at the PO, and I think they think that because they know him, its OK).

I've had about a 50% success rate. I'm always signing for stuff for my sister or my dad (who order a lot online), but very rarely have had to sign for anything from an eBay seller who has sent recorded.

UPS and FedEx always ask for a signature from us, without fail. RM are varied really - sometimes they will and sometimes they won't.

HDNL never get a signature from us (but not sure if they actually offer that service??). In the past we have had parcels lobbed over the side gate, despite there being a parcel box large enough for most parcels right outside the front door?!?!. There's no denying they saw it, as they wrote a card out saying where it was and posted it through the front door!

MyHermes depends on if you select Signature Required option normally i don't sign and he just leaves it outside
RM UK parcels i need to sign for and some international but sometimes not required
City Link always ask as well as Fedex, DHL and UPS
Parcelforce also ask me to sign it all the time

I got a parcel from BOOTS the other week (am) in the afternoon I got an email from Boots saying the courier informed them they could not deliver the parcel and left me a card. I emailed back to say that's funny as I got the parcel this morning!!!!! On-line invoice shows Not Delivered by courier :huh:

All a bit hit and miss then. Both the sellers say they sent the items on a signed for service, so I guess the delivery guys were just trying to save a bit of time and effort getting me to sign. Having read up on My Hermes I can see why they're in a hurry - 45p per delivery!? The guy was practically away before I had a proper hold on the box!
