I have a window cleaner that doesn't actually clean my windows

Hi all,

I realise this might be a somewhat peculiar post but I'll continue with it anyway. I had the same window cleaner for over 4 years until he retired in the summer there and the new, younger man that's taken over doesn't seem to be all that keen on actually cleaning your windows. I was at home this morning and I watched him through the blinds walk around the building and then drop a card through my front door, obviously thinking I wasn't at home and wouldn't be able to tell if he'd cleaned the windows or not... really sneaky. This isn't the first time this has happened actually because I've noticed in the past he'd do certain windows and leave the rest and he always seems to be in a rush because he only gives them one swipe and then moves on. I'm annoyed by the the fact he seems to be cheating me (and probably other people too) because most people are at work during the day and won't know for sure if they've really been done or not. I don't want to confront him because I'm a wheelchair user and he's a very big man but I'd prefer it if he just didn't do my windows anymore because he's not really making an effort and taking the money for nothing and I can't be doing with people who do half a job and so openly cheat the public. He takes £6 to clean six windows and I feel if I could I'd do it myself. I've heard from other people in the community that have cancelled his services that they've subsequentely had their windows egged so I'm worried about doing anything but I don't want to keep paying him for doing half a job, any suggestions?

Thank you.

  • Get rid and employ another one or do your own

I can tell if mine arent clean and wont pay if I had streak marks the whole point of a window cleaner is to have clean windows without streaks, this can only happen if he/she does their job properly

Get rid of him. Ours charged £3.50 and we got rid of him. He used to just give a quick swipe with a dirty old rag and that was it.

Give him the boot. If he does egg your windows, you'll easily be able to tell if his replacement has a similar attitude to the job

I would confront him...next time if you are in stand the other side of the door so when he puts his card through the door you can open it and discuss the window cleaning...if the windows dont get cleaned,he doesn't get paid.you will either see an improvement in the cleaning or its time to ditch him and get a new one

The OP would probably love to do that however the OP is in a wheelchair! Splitting hairs maybe but OP has already said they dont want to confront due to this.

Personally I would cancel him and to try and to avoid any confrontation just say you can no longer afford the service he provides.

If you don't want to tell him yourself, could you get a relative to just tell him that his services are no longer required?

tell him you are short of cash at the moment and can't afford him , and that you'll give him a call later in the year when they really need doing .... and then forget

Sack him, tell him why you're sacking him and don't dream of paying the £6 when he comes round for it.

That gets my vote for a diplomatic way out without confrontation. Presumably theres a way to contact him on the bills he pushes through the door. Or could you get a friend to tell him? Pay him up to date and get the message to him that for now, you no longer require his services.

Are you suggesting she pays the £6 for windows that haven't been cleaned?
