no bids then out bid by an earlier bid?

Moglex wrote:Sorry, I'm probably being unusually dense today but that still doesn't answer my question:
Why do you see certain bid histories where the same person appears twice with the same amount each time, these bids being next to each other?
This only happens when the bidder is the current highest.
say i have an item for 4.99 someone bids on it at 4.99 then changes their mind and decide they are willing to put in up to 5.99 the can then increase their higest bid but becasue they cant bid against themseves their name appears twice ......i think:D0 -
I think I see what you're saying.cookiemonster25 wrote:say i have an item for 4.99 someone bids on it at 4.99 then changes their mind and decide they are willing to put in up to 5.99 the can then increase their higest bid but becasue they cant bid against themseves their name appears twice ......i think:D
Because the software believes it must list every actual, non-automatic bid once, it will actually do just that even if it results in a rather confusing list.
And, of course, if you are correct it implies that you could actually get your name in there any number of times.
I think I might just give that a go: Bid early, bid often

Confirmed: cookiemonster is correct.
I've just got my name at the top of a list 4 times all with the same amount.
It would be funny if it confuses other bidders so much I win the item (at an absurdly low price).0 -
It's not a delay or anything but I think may have been some software. I have heard of the snipe stuff but not one that doesn't bid until fater someone else does.
Update is even stranger
Went on to ebay tonight to see if I had won or not. There was nothing there - no winning or losing bid - nothing to show it existed. Knowing it isn't a figment of my imagination - I checked my e-mail and sure enough an e-mail to confirm me as current highest bidder
"You are currently the high bidder for the following eBay item "
Your current bid: £20.06
Your maximum bid: £20.06
then a second later e-mail saying
The bid that you entered for the item (********) has been cancelled. You can view the reason provided for the cancellation by selecting the (bid history) link from the individual item page.
I did this and it says
The seller ended this listing early to sell to the high bidder(s) at current bid price.
The current bid price is says is Winning bid: £0.99
is it me or is it a bit odd? I know a buyer can pull an auction before the end - when they think it isn't going to reach a price they'd be happy with but then why not set a reserve? but for it to end saying they've accepted a high bid price when they haven't seems bizarre. Any further ideas?0 -
very odd cant explain...maybe the seller realised things were going off with the auction and ended it, keep your eye out to see if they relist and see whether they put it at a higher price etc, maybe a genuine c***k up0
