Item lost in post? Any point trying to claim?

Greetings,

I sent something of relatively low value to a buyer about two weeks or so ago first class, it hasn't turned up and its not actually expired so naturally I've refunded. I've had a quick scan of the RM website and it seems to imply I can attempt to claim (once the prerequisite days have passed) for it being lost - up to 6x1st class stamps I think - without any proof of posting etc. I just stuck it in the postbox near my house as it was a fairly low worth item hence no proof of posting etc, sooo am I just wasting my time attempting to claim without any form of evidence?
