Playing mp3 through car stereo

I've been trying to find a way of playing my mp3 player through my car stereo radio/cassette and recently purchased the following item

unfortunately the sound quality is Complete Rubbish And Piffle.

I'm now considering one of these mp3 fm transmitter devices, example here
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WHITE-4-CHANNEL-WIRELESS-CAR-FM-TRANSMITTER-iPOD-MP3-CD_W0QQitemZ330038757566QQihZ014QQcategoryZ48680QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

does anyone know if they are any good?
I'm looking for FM radio reception style quality

thanks in advance for any help

  • Well, they are illegal at the moment but it looks like they may be legalised soon

I've never used one so I can't comment on the sound quality. Of course if the output of the MP3 player is poor playing it through your car stereo isn't going to make it any better. What does it sound like through your home stereo?

ive got the same one as your ebay link and it works fine
did a 300 mile trip with it last week and no problems, just had to swap channles a couple of times if it picked up a bit of interference
i noticed pcworld selling them now for £29.99  (although dig display)

I've got a similar item to this and it seems to work fine ( although I only have a cheap SD Card-type MP3 player so the sound reproduction from that isn't brilliant anyway ). Mine's the more basic version of transmitter so it broadcasts on only one specific wavelength.
It's convenient as I don't have to create different CDs whenever I want a change of music for driving around to.

    HTH :)
  • I have had an iTrip which I use with my ipod for about 2yrs now. I found the sound quality to be excellent, although you do have to find the best place to put it, as positioning can affect quality. I purchased mine from iWorld.
  • You might find the modulated signal is lower in volume and bass/treble than normal signal so adjust these settings when listening to a fm modulated source.I find I have to increase the volume, but then its fine.
  • If you look here and here it will help you pick a clear frequency in the band that I-Trip uses (88.0 - 108.0).
