Car Insurance: Not at fault accident - who's insurance should we use?

Hi All,
Yesterday my car was involved in a bump :(
It happened in a supermarket carpark - I was not even in the car at the time - and the other person has admitted full liability.

My insurance company told me to only deal with them.

However the other persons car insurance company is now calling offering to arrange getting it fixed / hire car etc for me.

I just want this fixed as quickly as possible with as least hassle as possible.

I will need a hire car when it is being fixed. Through my company I will need to sign a credit agreement that if the costs are not recoverable I am liable. My insurance told me this will not be an issue in my case as the other party has admitted full liability. However her insurance are now saying they will not pay if they deem the costs to be unreasonable.

Where do I stand with this? I feel stuck in the middle!!
Thanks in advance for any advice offered!

Seems fair, ask her insurance to provide a hire car. They have said they will. It keeps the cost down, which is good for us all ultimately.
  • I doubt its your insurers; rather a company they have passed you on to. Do not engage them. You have to legally minimise your losses therefore let the other insurer deal with it.

"your" insurers will be planning to charge extortionate rates and then try and claim them back. The other insurer will probably refuse to pay if they exceed what they would have settled the claim for.

Do you have them admitting liability in writing. Then you should have no problem in claiming directl from them.

You need to go to the garage they have told you to go to. Get them to fax a quote to the Insurance company, they will then give them the go ahead to do the work. They do the work, The insurance company then pay the garage. All the insurance company is doing is asking you to mitigate your losses, ie booking a Mercedes Benz for hire when a lot smaller car would do.

if you are not happy with this get a claims management company involved, (and tell the insurance company that you are going to do this.)
They dont like claims management company as they charge a fortune, which they have to pay also.

Ive been through this a while ago. All will be well so dont worry.

Make sure your insurance has got the incident on their file marked 'For information only' and it should not impact on your premiums for next year, but check this also because some companies do.

  • Thanks for all the advice everyone...not been through this before so was unsure what the usual 'protocol' is! I am more than happy to let her insurers deal with this...seems like less hassle all round...and cheaper for us all in the long run as ultimately we all pay for these sorts of things through our premiums!

When i went through it May time, i made the decision to take my car in for repairs while we were on holiday so didnt need the car hire
for 4 days, wasnt of any saving to me but it saved their insurance company a mint. Wouldnt mind but the person rang up initially to me ranting and raving because i wanted the car done wher i wanted it done (where I had bought it from and a main dealer and not a cheap back alley place where he wanted it done. He tried to bully and intimidate me but i stood my ground and got it done my way.

    Good luck and dont worry,
