Car insurance questions

I am due to renew my car insurance & have been searching online for qoutes using moneysupermarket.com
My qoutes are coming back quite high, with the lowest quote having the highest comp/voluntary excess.
I have read that putting down higher voluntary excess could bring down the price of the quote. However, Iif I do agree to a higher voluntary excess will I have to pay it if I need to make a claim or at the end of the day, is it my choice to pay it or not?

If you claim to repair your own vehicle then you will have to pay the excess. The man without a signature.0

You will have to pay the voluntary excess, as well as the compulsary excess, it's not a choice, both will become payable added together.0

I would just advise you to try other price comparison websites as well, i tried mine with a few and by trying another one on the off chance there was a quote much cheaper. This was with a company called ibuyeco, wasn't too aware of them in the marketplace, but i'm usually just after a good deal. No problems so far.0

Ring insurance direct- I've found the majority of the time I get a cheaper quote by phoning.0

Have you tried CIS,
They are pretty reasonable, Ive been with them for years.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
You just need to work out the gamble, I personaly pay a higher premium for a lower excess. My total excess is £250 but some of the policies wanted well over £1k which is just silly.0

Unfortunately insurance seems to have gone up a lot this year. The reports in the news recently were stating around 40% increase, and that more or less matches the best quote I've been able to get so far for my car.
With regard to the higher excess, you will have to pay it if you need to claim on your insurance - if it was a successful claim against a 3rd party (i.e. an accident that isn't your fault) then you wouldn't have to pay it.
Only you can decide whether you are prepared to take the risk of having to pay out the higher excess should you have an accident vs the cost of the lower insurance premium now.0 -
Thanks for the info.
My car insurance quotes ain't looking to good this time round.
Bought a 97 Mazda MX5 & sold my 97 Ford Puma.
moneysupermarket.com seems to be giving the best quotes. Have tried gocompare, direct line, bell & coop so far.0 -
depends how much the car is worth really. little point in having a high excess if the car is worth very little in the first place.

Don't forget to look at cashback as well, I got £100 cashback last time which made the £400 premium more palatable!:A0
