Compressing image files

hello,

How would I go about compressing files for upload?

I am attempting to upload some pics and its taking an age and then finally states its failed

I have downloaded something called win RAR but I just cant work out how to compress my pics and then upload them. I have read the "help" file but they really dont help at all.

Thanks

Jen

Pictures are pretty well compressed as they are, Winrar wouldn't do much to help.

What format are the pictures? .bmp .jpg
  • You need to RESIZE the pictures. Depending on the requirements of the recipient, who probably doesn't need a 3,000 pixel wide image, you could reduce them to something like 1600x1200 or 1024x768 which is adequate for many purposes. I use Irfanview, http://www.irfanview.com, which an excellent image viewer and this can resize very easily.

Remember that UPloading things on the internet is relatively slow with ADSL, around a tenth of the download speed.

Download ACDSee, open pic and use Resize option.

    OR

When taking pics of the EBay items in the first place, reduce the pixel setting on your camera, and reduce the picture quality to give you a smaller file to start with.

irfanview will let you resize for the web and is very straightforward to use and free.

Thank you everyone. I have resized them as suggested and in future will change the settings on my camera. I had no idea it was that easy. MSE and the MSE-ers are truly amazing!

Don't do that , because you will one day forget to set them back and the once of a lifetime shot you come across will not be quite the same in thumbnail size rather than a full size 5/10/14.4 Mbps prizewinner. Use the power of the pc to render down nothing lost, you cannot get a workable print of anything by resizing up.
