Again, I mean no offence with what I say. For someone with a physical disability it is easier, just take the clothes and show the 14 & 8 inch scars, plus let them stab my foot to their hearts content. But how can you prove certain MH claims without a doctor monitoring it over a period of several days? My sister who is a GP quite often refers people to the local psychiatric centre to assist them in proving the claims.

Unfortunately I only have to wear a short sleeved tshirt for a physical representation of my 9 years of mental heath problems to be seen, so I am a clear danger to myself. However, I cannot show the constant pain and discomfort I am in from my physical disabilities, which I feel are my primary care and mobility needs at the moment.

    I would disagree:
I have physical and mental health problems. I have scars from where I've self-harmed. Because all the physical damage is inside me, it can't exactly be proved - unless of course you shine a light in my eyes - in which case, I'll probably scream.:o

Sorry, i know nothing of your history. Do you think you are one of the what will become many people with illnesses who will now be turned down for DLA and lose other benefits?

I know nothing of many MH's but could you if you want the benefit strongly enough not ask to be admitted for a full report on the claimants health by professionals who could monitor it over a period of several days?

Not even that easy for physical claims - an assessor is not allowed to stab your foot, and they wont ask you to take of your clothes either (and would likely refuse to let you if you tried to).

They are limited to performing the tests as laid down by legislation.

They in most cases wont even have access to your medical history either.
[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that

  • Cit_K, I am hoping the rescource centre worker will assist me in getting everything I need together. I haven't a clue what I'm doing, so need full informed advice & assistance.

As for MH, I genuinely think it's very difficult to prove the extent which MH affects a person on a daily basis. My moods change quite frequently & I think to get a full comprehensive picture, I'd probably have to spend months in a hospitial as opposed to a week.

Also, so far, none of the professionals I have seen have been very supportive & it's taken my OH to intervene for them to sit up & take notice. However, me being cynical & untrusting, I'm not convinced anything will actually get done.
