Edf switched my tariff in july without telling me!

I've just had my bill though with a payment review attached asking for a larger amount per month (nothing new) but when i phoned them up to say that i though those amounts were way too high. I was told whilst i was on the phone (they just dropped it in to the converstion) that they would be able to find my a cheaper deal as i had been on the standard rate since July due to the Online V5 tarrif coming to an end. They said i should have had a letter (total bull) and i've been charged the standard rate since then! It's news to me and i'd really like to know if they were allowed to do that. When i signed up to it, it made no mention of only being for a certain time period and i had no notice of them changing it.

I'm now stuck on the standard rate as i didn't want to agree to any other tarrif over the phone (i'd been put on the spot really) and just a little confused as i've obviously been paying more than i should have been since July as i always shop around to get the best deal every so often. :(

  • I do not know if online V5 was a time limited tariff, but some companies, npower was one so EDF may be another did move customers from some of their earlier cheaper tariffs onto the standard tariff.
In npowers case though they did send a letter giving enough time for disgruntled customers, me!, to swap to another supplier.

online 5 with edf ended 31st July this year, they should have written to you, and it is generally the agreed standard among power co's, when tariff ended, you default to the standard rate, had you had their letter informing you of the end of online 5, it would have told you you would be on standard but also invited the customer to call edf and get them to look at the current tariff range and see about going on a better tariff

Thanks for the replies, i have emailed them and had a moan. There isn't even anything in my online account with them and considering it is an online tariff seems an obvious place to pop a notice to me!
Anyway i'm just glad i found out now rather than after winter etc but i'm still shocked that you think you've signed up to a decent tariff only to find they have changed it further down the line without telling you.

They did tell you. It's in the terms if you bothered to read them.
    6. You agree to remain on the EDF Energy Online Tariff Version 5 for each account until the Online Tariff Version 5 comes to an end, which, unless we write to you to advise of any extension, shall be 31 July 2010 (the ‘End Date’).
    7. Once the Online Tariff Version 5 ends ("End Date"), each participating Customer hereby agrees for each of their energy accounts under the Online Tariff Version 5 to be automatically transferred onto EDF Energy’s standard tariff product at such time, or such alternative product that EDF Energy considers to be an appropriate product for the Customer’s metering arrangements. ...

Doesn't your online account page tell you that you are on a standard tariff?Surely it isn't still showing the old online tariff v5??

Thanks most helpfull but i signed up via a cashback site and can't say that they made it anywhere near clear that it was only for a set period. I wouldn't have bothered switching to them if i had know seeing as i have only been with them for 8mths and that was a complete pina as they can't seem to work out how to send letters anyway. Apparantly thet couldn't find the meter reference but instead of telling us they just left us with npower and cancelled the gas account! Useless company if you ask me.

Cashback sites don't sell anything. The only terms you'll usually find there are terms relating to the use of the cashback site itself.

They merely act as an affiliate to the selling party. In the case of most energy deals it means direct to the suppliers website (via an affiliate link) although on occassions it may be through a third party agent.

Either way, the product you would be purchasing would be from EDF. It would be EDF terms that you agreed to when you agreed to the contract. It would have been EDF that contacted you welcoming you as a new customer (and giving you the statutory cooling off period).

    ;)
