Ouch - what are you driving to get only around 20mpg. Chap I car share with has a Mazda RX-8 and he only gets around 22mpg and feeds it with Tesco 99 RON at 121.9p/litre for approx. 25.2p per mile. I usually go for a month between fill ups, he does about a week and a half

Why do people think it makes a big difference from checking empty rather than full? When you fill you wont get the same amoutn of fuel in the tank
either, Depends on the pumps nozzle shape & size and pressure at which it cuts off.

1 tank full is not really going to say much anyway. After a few miles it will average out.

I have kept a fuel record for my current car, If i add an extra 60 litres to the figures it only changes the average mpg by 0.5

Its remembering to keep writing it down.

Because at full the difference is likely to be quite small whereas at 'empty' the difference between fill is likely to be much greater unless you actually run the car until the fuel runs out.

    9.6p / mile on average, 52.4mpg, hypermiling

Seems pretty amazing I'm spending less per mile (albeit fuel costs only) than a Micra - do you drive it like you stole it.....

I drive more like a pensioner on a Sunday afternoon jaunt to the garden centre! Your fuel consumption is better because your chariot is a diesel. That said, your return is quite impressive.

My 2 litre BMW petrol Auto is similar. £65 of fuel gets me approx 350 miles therefore 20p a mile.

    Thats the problem with Autos.

I've began to seriously consider buying another car based on its mpg, road tax, cost of tyres etc. The problem is I only do small journeys and Im rarely on the motorway.

Isn't that all the more reason to get a smaller, more economical car? If your not driving long distances or motorway cruising, is there any need for such luxury? I ditched my Audi (before it ditched me!) for that very reason. OK, it's a bit of a come down to a Micra, and I've had to endure friends taunts, such as 'Are you re-training as a hairdresser?' and 'Does your Grandad know you've got his car?', but when all's said and done I'm the one saving a fair few pennies and the one enjoying a few more pints!

We (mostly MrsLA) used to get 25 mpg out of ours. It doesn't need premium fuel. The handbook states as much.
  • Just worked mine out.

    I have a 2004 Astra 1.6 Twinport, 5 dr hatch.

I've only had the car a month, and refuelled twice so far - £50 first time, £55 the second.

    First £50 worth @ £112.9/litre (9.73 Gallons) from empty did 380 miles (39mpg).

    Second £55 worth @ £113.9/litre (10.6 Gallons) from empty did 407 miles (38.4mpg).

So if I'm right, total miles (787) divided by the total cost of fuel (£105) makes it 13p/mile?

I have a 25 mile round trip daily commute to work, which is mostly urban with two stretches of dual carriageway, with the rest of my weekly mileage made up of general urban (round the doors) type driving.

So happy enough to be averaging 38 mpg out a 1.6 petrol, TBH.

I'm sure you are right - he reckons he gets a bit more power and mpg out of it but I think he's deluding himself :rotfl: - 231bhp should be enough :D
