givng shares to charity

My m-i-l died this year and she had a few shares, literally ones or twos in about four companies. We have not sorted them out yet but none of them have produced a divident cheque. I have rung one of them via a number on the back of the cert and he went into huge detail about how to change the shares from m-i-ls name into my husbands, basically a huge ammount of hassle and more expense than the shares are worth.

I seem to remember vagely about being able to sign them over to charity. Have I imagines this?

Has anyone else done this and are there costs involved?

  • Sharegift can help.

Click on the "donating shares" section after you follow the link.

    It shouldn't cost you anything.

"The shares are part of a deceased estate - can I still give them to ShareGift?

Yes you can but there is some additional paperwork required. If a sole shareholder has died, please send a sealed copy of the grant of probate. If there is no probate, you will need to contact the registrars who will tell you how to proceed. If a joint shareholder has died, please send a certified copy of the death certificate. Please let us know if the company’s registrars have already seen these documents – if they have, you will not need to send them."

Also if you gift shares then you don't pay CGT, and can reclaim an amount against Income tax.

I would be delighted to tell you more next week if you PM me.
