My £45 watch needs a replacement battery
So - I went to Timpsons and was quoted a ridiculous £18.95 for a replacement battery - which I can get in Maplin for £3
Anyway - I went elsewhere - a local independant jewellers got my custom by doing the same thing for £6
I was wondering whether it was a simple job to fit a watch battery myself ?

Should be simple to prise the back off your watch.
Look at the back around the edges there may be small cut-ins where you can get a tiny screwdriver or small knife to take off the back, or the back may screw off. You'll see the battery held in by a small spring, a bit fiddly but not a problem to do, and you'll get a card of mixed size batteries in Home & Bargain or even the £shop.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

I think most watches are pretty easy to open, especially if you have any of those tiny jeweller's screwdrivers (set of 8 diff sizes £1 from my local cheapie a while back) but just occasionally you may come across a watch that needs special equipment to open it - I've had a couple. However, I'd never go to a High Street jeweller's, they really rip you off. Some small independent jewellers can be reasonable, and some market stalls have special equipment. Try prising the back off yourself first, to check you can do it and to check the battery size, chances are it won't be a problem. As someone else suggested try B&M, Home Bargains or any local cheapie for a card of watch batteries of varying sizes - usually only about £1 so you can't lose!
Use a hammer only if you've managed to get a watch with a really obscure type of battery that isn't available anywhere in this country :eek:0 -

- any market has one, two quid for the same job, takes just two minutes while you admire the bling on his stall.
