How do I find out if i have gas?

Hi
I have scrapped the idea of replacing my ancient storage heaters for newer ones.... and instead am hoping to install gas central heating.
When I did my flat up I discovered i had a gas pipe outlet that was capped off. How do i go about finding out if there is actually gas coming to the pipe or if it is just there for show?
Thanks

Do you have a gas meter in the property? Where is the gas pipe that you refer to located? No free lunch, and no free laptop0

The pipe i refer to is located in the kitchen... no idea where it comes from before that. If there is any type of meter somewhere i wouldn't have a clue.
I live in an ex local authority flat on the 3rd floor, the flat on the ground floor has gas central heating, this is the only one in the block.0 -
If no meter - get a gas safe (formerly corgi) heating engineer (or contact British Gas) in to check for live supply - they will guide you on who to contact re getting a meter fitted etc.0

Ahh come on guys I was a hoping for something along the lines of 'sniff the air' or 'keep your ears open for the noise' or 'someone will tell you if you did'

Well maybe have a look near to your electricity meter? In the cupboard under the stairs? Behind the front door? They don't exactly blend into the background...
Trace the pipe back from the kitchen?
If the flat downstairs is the same layout, and it had gas installed when built, the meter should be in the same place in yours. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Rule No 1 - If you have a capped off gas pipe expect there to be gas in it.
Rule No 2 - If you have a capped off gas pipe expect there to be gas in it.
Rule No 3 - If you have a capped off gas pipe expect there to be gas in it.
Its a bit difficult to miss a gas meter. They look a little like this:
